Why Scented Candles and Sprays Could Be Harmful to Your Health
With fall in full swing, it's tempting to fill our homes with those familiar cozy scents—pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and apple pie come to mind. Many of us turn to scented candles or air fresheners to create that warm, inviting atmosphere. But while these products might bring the seasonal ambiance you crave, they often come with some hidden health risks you may not be aware of.

What’s Really in Your Candles and Sprays?
The problem with most scented candles and sprays is that they’re loaded with synthetic chemicals!  For example, paraffin wax candles, one of the most common types found in stores, are made from petroleum by-products. When burned, they release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene and toluene—known carcinogens. These are the same chemicals found in diesel fuel fumes, so it's not something you'd want to breathe in regularly, especially in the comfort of your own home.
Even air fresheners or sprays labeled as "clean" or "natural" often contain phthalates, which are used to make fragrances last longer. Unfortunately, phthalates can disrupt hormone function and have been linked to a range of health issues, including asthma and reproductive problems. So while that apple-cinnamon spray may smell wonderful, the long-term impact on your health may not be worth it.

The Impact on Your Air Quality
Burning scented candles or using air sprays can contribute to indoor air pollution. Since most homes have limited ventilation during cooler months, these toxic particles can linger in the air, affecting not only your lungs but also your skin and eyes. For those with asthma, allergies, or sensitivities, this can lead to a variety of symptoms, from headaches to breathing difficulties.

Is There a Safer Way to Enjoy Fall Scents?
The good news is, you don’t have to sacrifice those delicious fall scents to keep your home healthy. There are plenty of natural alternatives that allow you to create that same cozy atmosphere—without the harmful chemicals. Imagine filling your home with the aromas of cinnamon, clove, or vanilla, all while knowing you're not exposing your body to toxins.
