Is Your Makeup Hurting Your Skin? Here's How to Choose Safer Options
Let’s chat about something most of us love—makeup. Whether it's a full glam look or just a little mascara to brighten up the day, it’s fun to play with cosmetics. But here's the thing—some beauty products have hidden ingredients that might not be as fabulous for our health. Don’t worry, though! We’re going to dive into what’s really in those products and how we can make safer choices while still looking and feeling great.

First up, parabens. These sneaky preservatives are often added to cosmetics to make them last longer. But here’s the not-so-great part: parabens have been linked to hormone disruption and even breast cancer. The good news? There are plenty of paraben-free options out there now, and it’s as simple as checking the label to make sure your products are free from these.

Next, let’s talk about phthalates. They’re often used in fragrances to make the scent last longer. The downside? They can mess with your hormones and may cause reproductive issues. A great way to avoid them is by choosing fragrance-free products or ones that are naturally scented. Your hormones will thank you!

Now, this one might really surprise you—formaldehyde-releasing agents. Yep, that’s the same formaldehyde we all learned about in science class! Some cosmetics use ingredients that slowly release formaldehyde to preserve the product. This stuff can irritate your skin and affect your breathing, so it’s best to skip anything with those kinds of preservatives.

And then there are synthetic colors. Sure, they make our makeup pop, but many of them come from coal tar, which is known to cause cancer. Instead, look for products with natural or mineral-based pigments. You’ll still get those beautiful colors without the risks.

So, how do we avoid these not-so-lovely ingredients?
  1. Be a label reader. It’s easier than you think! Just check those ingredients and stay away from the ones we talked about.
  2. Try natural and organic brands. They focus on safe ingredients that care for your skin, not hurt it. And trust me, there are so many great ones out there!
  3. Spread the word. When you find something good, share it with your friends and family. You could be helping someone else make better choices for their health.
For the past 7 years, I’ve been using makeup that I know is safe for my skin. And when I say safe, I mean really safe—without any guesswork or shady ingredients. I love how it actually makes my skin feel healthier, unlike some products that leave me irritated. One of my favorite things is the subscription service I use—every three months, I get everything I need at a great price! It’s affordable, and I never run out.
